CREATING A MAGAZINE COVER

I TOOK THE CREATION OF THE MAGAZINE COVER SERIOUSLY. I WANTED TO CREATE A MAGAZINE THAT GAVE US FOOD FOR THOUGHT ABOUT A PERSONAL ISSUE, MY SON HAVING JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH BEING GIFTED AND AUTISM. HE SHOWS HIS GIFTED SIDE MORE THAN HIS AUTISTIC SIDE AND I WONDERED IF WE COULD HAVE BEEN GETTING IT WRONG. OR IF I HAVE ANYWAY, LOOKING AT IT WHOLLY IN A NEGATIVE LIGHT.

MAYBE AUTISTIC CHILDREN HAVE A LOT TO TEACH US, MAYBE THEY ARE THE 'NORMAL' ONES, MAYBE THEY WILL RULE THE WORLD! I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO RETHINK OLD THOUGHTS AND PUT A NEW SPIN ON OUR BELIEFS ABOUT AUTISM. THIS MAGAZINE WAS CREATED FOR NEW AGE THINKERS, FOR THE FUTURE!

I DID THIS SHOOT WITH MY SON HERE IN OUR LIVING ROOM, PLANTED SOME GROUND CHICKEN ON HIS HEAD TO LOOK LIKE A BRAIN AND SET UP SOME HANGING WIRE IN THE 'BRAIN' TO MATCH THE TITLE OF THE MAGAZINE. IT IS ENTITLED 'REWIRED' BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT ASD KIDS' BRAINS ARE WIRED DIFFERENTLY.

GROUND CHICKEN LOOKS LIKE BRAIN, BUT IT GETS EXTREMELY MUSHY ONCE YOU TOUCH IT. IT DIDN'T LOOK MUCH LIKE BRAIN ANYMORE BUT IT HAD TO DO. I CREATED A WHIRL AROUND MY SON IN PHOTOSHOP TO GIVE THE FINAL IMAGE A BLURRED EFFECT FOR A SENSE OF MOVEMENT, AS IF MOVING TOWARD SOMETHING. I ALSO WANTED TO GIVE IT A FUTURISTIC FEEL WITH THE COLOURS, TONE, SKIN, AND EVEN THE SKIRT, WHICH YOU CAN'T REALLY SEE SO MUCH IN THE FINAL PRODUCT.

TRYING TO BALANCE RAW GROUND CHICKEN ON HIS HEAD.

YUMMY, RAW BRAIN!
